Title: Labour market dynamics of EU immigrants in Sweden from 1995 to 2008
Abstract: This thesis examines the duration and determinants of employment and unemployment of EU immigrants in Sweden and compares that with the native population in the period 1995-2008. In Sweden, immigrants’ labour market outcomes are a topic of great interest as Sweden has high inflow and stock of migrants. Previous studies lacked the differentiation among diverse groups of immigrants and treated them on an aggregate level. The results in this thesis clearly depict the difference it makes if immigrants are treated as an aggregated group or distinguished by countries of emigration. Employing event history analysis, results demonstrate the relative quality of immigrants’ integration into the Swedish labour market showing that employment survival drops faster for immigrants and in case of unemployment native Swedes get re-employed more quickly than do immigrants from EU. Regression analysis showed that age, gender, education, household type, employment sector and social assistance have statistically significant effect on labour market performance. Furthermore, immigrants’ labour market performance varies across the countries of emigration.
