Abstract: It is pointed out that airport capacity and facilities have not kept up with the ever increasing demand for air transport, largely due to lack of space, environmental problems, and difficulties of land acquisition. These conditions impose the necessity for the maximum use of existing airport space in the improvement of facilities and planning for future traffic. Some analytical models are proposed for quantifying the concept of runway capacity in single (landing or take off) and mixed (landing and take off) operation. Delay and saturation factors affecting this capacity are analysed, and the mathematical models are exemplified by application to real operation data.
