Title: THE NEW LOCAL PUBLIC TRANSPORT SCENARIO IN ITALY
Abstract: With respect to the evolution of demand for mobility, transport companies must now measure up to an actual and potential mature clientele. The demand for transport evolves and differentiates according to the use sector: the demand for more flexible services tailored to meet the actual needs for moving about, like for example call-services. It is necessary to review the mobility system in order to evaluate the crisis of the urban system. The following critical situations and emergencies can longer be sustained: (1) the imbalance between the use of collective and individual transport systems which is becoming more and more pronounced; (2) the capacity of the parking areas and stopping areas which are insufficient; (3) the lack of railway transport systems; (4) the levels of atmospheric and acoustic pollution which exceed the tolerance thresholds; (5) the traffic congestion which causes frequent moments of paralysis; (6) the increase in accidents; and (7) the demand of integrated offer is getting stronger and stronger. There is a growing sensitivity by the Administrators and general public towards the problems involved in urban living conditions and environmental supportability. The scene is now open to European competition. According to market logic, it is possible for collective transport to be controlled by private, national and foreign companies.
