Title: AS ATTITUDES CHANGE, ENGINEERS SEE AN INDUSTRY EVOLVE : LIGHT RAIL, BUS RAPID TRANSIT AND ALTERNATIVE FINANCING HELP PROJECTS
Abstract: This article focuses on the burgeoning market for mass transit across the United States in many municipalities, including areas that have previously seen no desire for those types of projects. With new funding from SAFETEA-LU, previously auto-oriented cities such as Dallas, Phoenix, and Denver can now begin their extensive light rail expansion projects. The article attributes this market to a heightened sensitivity by cities in the United States to Transit Oriented Development (TOD). Although this is not a new concept, rapid population growth in cities such as Portland, Oregon and Los Angeles is increasing the applicability and practicality of TOD. The article also briefly touches on another concept that is increasing in popularity: public-private transportation projects. This trouble-fraught method is articulated by the expensive 14-mile Seattle monorail project and the $654 million Las Vegas monorail project.
