Title: DETERMINATION OF OPTIMAL NUMBER OF PROBE VEHICLES FOR REAL-TIME TRAFFIC FLOW INFORMATION
Abstract: Real-time traffic information is an essential factor in a dynamic route guidance system which is one of the core parts of an intelligent transportation system (ITS). The real-time information is usually collected from the probe vehicles armed with data collection and communication devices. Since there are tradeoffs between the number of equipped vehicles and the quality of the collected information, the appropriate number of navigating vehicles have to be decided. In this study, a simple approach for this decision problem based on the large sampling theory is introduced. This approach is designed to guarantee with a specified level of certainty that all the link groups maintain the predetermined density of probe vehicles, respectively. How to estimate real-time speeds for the links missing probe vehicles is also discussed. For the covering abstract see IRRD E102946.
