Abstract: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has proposed two new regulations to bring light trucks, minivans and multi-purpose vehicles (LTV) up to the same safety standards as passenger cars: vehicles must have safety belts and air bags; doors will be required to withstand the same force as those on passenger cars. NHTSA already requires head restraints and lap-shoulder safety belts for rear seats, and LTV roofs as strong as those in cars. The article also discusses the random drug testing for transportation workers, including truckers and transit workers. It is proposed that action be defered on the suspension of drivers' licenses of convicted drug abusers until its legal implications are studied. It is noted that about 39% of the 47,093 motor vehicle crash deaths in 1988 were alcohol related. The 1989 report, 'Injury Prevention: Meeting the Challenge,' is discussed.
