Title: INLAND WATER TRANSPORTATION AND THE EXPANSION OF THE TRI-CITY REGIONAL PORT
Abstract: Inland waterway transportation in the U.S. provides a low-cost, flexible means of transporting basic raw materials, fuels, and other bulk-loading commodities, as well as semifinished and bulky finished products. Currently, these inland waterways are carrying more traffic than ever and, consequently, their ports are handling enormous amounts of freight. This paper describes the expansion of one such facility, the Tri-City Regional Port, located adjacent to Locks and Dam No. 27 in southwestern Madison County, Illinois, in the St. Louis, Missouri, metropolitan area. The importance of considering intermodal access, financial, and environmental factors in the expansion process is discussed.
