C-ITS will enable communication and real-time information sharing between vehicles and roadside infrastructure. The objective of C-ITS is to improve safety, productivity, efficiency and environmental outcomes for the road system, and to provide services to all road users and operators through giving advice or facilitating actions. This paper discusses how emerging C-ITS could potentially integrate with existing ITS currently being operated by Austroads member road agencies in order to provide benefits to road users as a result of vehicle-to-infrastructure and infrastructure-to-vehicle communication. While it is acknowledged that C-ITS uses a variety of communication mediums, this paper focuses on what is required to achieve the four levels of interoperability (technical, syntactical, semantic and organisational) between C-ITS and existing ITS infrastructure utilising 5.9 GHz Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC).Read More
