Abstract: The article discusses the role of the road network in providing mobility and economic growth. It argues that a good quality road network contributes to the economic development of countries and regions, not only by improving accessibility but also through spill-over effects of employment. Good quality road infrastructure development and the provision of facilities meet concerns about road safety, reduction in traffic congestion and the associated pollutant emissions, improvements in the living environment, and improvements in user comfort.
