Title: PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS OF HIGH PERFORMANCE AND ADVANCED MARINE (NIPAM) VEHICLES
Abstract: The paper gives a general overview of the hydrodynamic performance characteristics of those ships described as high performance vehicles, which includes hydrofoil ships, air cushion vehicles and surface effect ships, high speed planing craft, and the small waterplane area twin-hulled (SWATH) ship. Advantages and limitations relative to the intended mission for each ship will be discussed. The propulsive transport efficiency for various high performance vehicles and conventional ships is plotted using useful load. Speed degradation vs sea state and accelerations vs sea state are also plotted. Comparisons between high performance vehicles for the above parameter are made.
