Abstract: The North American Joint Positive Train Control (PTC) Project (formerly two separate programs known as the IDOT PTC in Illinois and the CSX Transportation/Norfolk Southern program in the east) is moving ahead with a major effort to develop the next generation of PTC for U.S. railroads. PTC's core goals of preventing train to train collisions, enforcing speed restrictions, and providing protection of roadway workers and equipment within authorized limits remain unchanged. Unchanged, too, are objectives to accomplish these core goals safely, cost effectively, and with a high degree of interoperability among suppliers. This article examines how to best coordinate safety with PTC and new Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) initiatives.
