Abstract: Public Transport (Transit) is often seen a cure all for many of the problems of our current society, including environmental, congestion and community lifestyle concerns. The style of operation often determines the degree to which this is true. Within the hierarchy of transit operation, bus operation is seen as the most flexible. Advantages include an assortment of bus sizes, an armoury of different operating practices, a collection of different control methods, and a library of different marketing approaches. Basically, bus is a group travel mode, and it is the grouping of potential passengers into a load which ultimately decides the success or failure of any bus service. In an environment where urbanisation is increasing; where, in many areas of our cities, population densities are low, and where the sprawl of suburban areas is increasing, efficient and effective operation of bus services is a definite challenge. Bus services can and do produce results. The trick is in matching service design and operation to the variety of passenger needs.
