Title: Mobility Hubs vs. Intermodal Centers: A Case Study of Mystic, Connecticut
Abstract: In a time when more and more people are using local transportation, consumers and transit agencies alike are identifying a need for more highly coordinated mobility options. Many transit agencies are embracing the concept of mobility management, which is a strategic approach to service coordination and customer service that is becoming a worldwide trend in the public transportation sector. When correctly implemented, mobility management will move transit agencies away from their roles as fixed-route service operators, and toward collaboration with other transportation providers. The idea behind this approach is to create a full range of well synchronized mobility services within a community. Mobility management starts with the creation of partnerships among transportation providers in a particular region, so as to expand the range of viable options communities have for transportation. Communication is also a critical component of mobility management, as the general public must be made aware of these options. With the mobility management approach, transit resources are efficiently coordinated, enabling customers to make better decisions, as well as improving customer service. To more effectively serve customers, many agencies are shifting from relying on centralized transfer points to developing more direct connection or cross-town services and distributing transfer points to a number of locations within the network. The decentralized system, however, requires appropriately designed transfer facilities, especially at major transfer points, which provides a great opportunity for mobility hubs. Mobility hubs are customized, technology-laden, small intermodal centers that can be replicated and placed over a large geographic area.
