Title: Transport in rural and remote Australia: a local government perspective
Abstract: The Local Government view of roads and transport services is different to that of central governments and their agencies because Local Governments are directly concerned with the way transport systems interact with the other community facilities, services and needs. While this community context applies to all Local Governments, councils in rural and remote Australia focus sharply on the critical survival issues. Roads and transport are critical survival issues. Among the transport issues, roads rate as priority one for most rural and remote communities. Roads mean access to schools, to hospitals, to shops, to a wide range of community services, to sport and other recreation and to terminals. Roads are critical for moving freight into and out of the region and facilitate business travel and tourism.
