Title: Municipal waste: an energy source for Europe
Abstract: Incinerating municipal wastes and recovering usable resources should become more cost-effective as the cost of primary fuels and materials increases. A major topic of discussion at the European Conference on Waste Management was the need for further research and development on waste handling technology. Excerpts from two conference papers describe current European Community recovery techniques and methane gas production by anaerobic decomposition. Conventional incineration techniques may have reached their efficiency peak, but new methods of pyrolysis, high-temperature incineration, and waste-derived fuels are under examination. Seasonal fluctuations in steam demand and the needs of small communities pose technical problems. The integrated boiled (water-wall furnace) and the separate furnace are used in Europe, but better technology is needed to make the processes more efficient. 3 tables. (DK)
