Title: Quality management in the Department of Transport, Queensland
Abstract: The Queensland Department of Transport has now had six years of experience with quality assurance systems in the construction of almost a billion dollars worth of roadworks. The translation of quality principles from manufacturing to general civil engineering and administrative activities has not been without problems. Initial reactions have usually been negative, but those who have persevered and gained depth of understanding through practical experience with quality management are generally enthusiastic supporters. This paper describes some general lessons learnt on the early stages of a long journey.
