Title: $SAFETY EVALUATION OF HIGH OCCUPANCY VEHICLE (HOV) LANES IN METRO TORONTO
Abstract: At the 66th Annual ITE Meeting in Minneapolis in 1996, the authors presented the findings from monitoring operations of high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes in Toronto, one of the few arterial HOV lanes in the world. Then, it was observed that a number of conflicts, related to HOV traffic operations, implied potential safety concerns. Following a literature search, it was concluded that there was limited knowledge with respect to the safety performance of HOV lanes, in particular for arterial road systems. Thus, a more in-depth study, including an additional year of accident data, of the HOV operations in Toronto was required. This paper is based on the follow-up study that was conducted. It presents the process that was followed and summarizes the findings of the study.
