Title: INCREASED COAST GUARD ASSETS FOR HOMELAND SECURITY
Abstract: An increased emphasis has been placed on the port security mission under the Coast Guard's captains of the port (COPTs) authority since the terrorist attacks of September 11. The Coast Guard has responsibilities in all following six critical mission areas of the National Strategy for Homeland Security: intelligence and warning, border and transport security, domestic counterterrorism, protection of infrastructure, defending against catastrophic terrorism, and emergency preparedness and response. The article provides an overview of the Coast Guard's response for the increased need for security.
