Title: Greenhouse and urban transport planning in Victoria
Abstract: Transport plays a significant role in the production of greenhouse gases in Victoria. 22% of greenhouse emissions are produced from transport, with private vehicles making up over half this amount. At the Federal level transport is one of the sectors identified through the Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD) process as having significant inter- relationship with the environment. If current trends in vehicle usage continue then by 2005 greenhouse gas emissions from transport in Australia will be 40% above the Toronto target . This means a major task faces government, government agencies, the private sector and all individuals if the target is to be reached. Reductions in emissions must also be achieved within wider community transport needs for improved access to services, safety, economic development and financial affordability.
