Title: URBANIZATION, INDUSTRIALIZATION AND THE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
Abstract: BY THE YEAR 2000 ABOUT 80% OF THE U. S. POPULATION WILL LIVE IN NONRURAL AREAS. MANY DEOMOGRAPHERS AND OTHER PLANNERS FEAR THAT THE COST OF HIGH-DENSITY SETTLEMENTS NOW OUTWEIGHS THE BENEFIT AND THAT URBAN AND REGIONAL GROWTH STRATEGIES NEED TO BE DEVELOPED THAT WILL REVERSE THE PRESENT TREND QUICKLY AND DRAMATICALLY. HOWEVER, OUTSIDE OF EFFORTS BY A FEW UNITED NATIONS RESEARCH PERSONNEL, THERE HAS BEEN LITTLE WORK TO MAKE A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE ON URBANIZATION, ESPECIALLY IN ITS RELATIONS TO INDUSTRIALIZATION AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT. IN THE PRESENT BIBLIOGRAPHY, ATTENTION IS FOCUSED ON NATIONAL AND SUBNATIONAL DEVELOPMENTS. THE BIBLIOGRAPHY IS DIVIDED INTO FIVE SECTIONS THAT COVER GENERAL WORKS ON URBANIZATION; THE ORIGIN AND ROLE OF TOWNS IN URBANIZATION; THE RELATION OF URBANIZATION TO SOCIAL, POLITICAL, AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT WITHIN LOCAL, REGIONAL, AND NATIONAL BOUNDARIES; NATIONAL, REGIONAL, AND LOCAL PLANNING STRATEGIES; AND URBAN FORM AND STRUCTURE. /AUTHOR/
