Abstract: Motorcycles make up about 50% of the total registered vehicles in Malaysia; that is estimated to be more than 12 million. In view of its vulnerability, it is not surprising that accident fatality involving motorcycles recorded as high as 60% of the almost 7,000 annual accident fatalities. This percentage has remained consistent over the past few years. Only about 1.3% of the existing Federal road network is provided with motorcycle lane facilities. Two types of facilities have been constructed: exclusive motorcycle lane (EML) is a dedicated motorcycle lane physically separated from the main stream traffic and may have its own alignment; while a non-exclusive motorcycle lane (NEML) is a lane constructed adjacent to existing traffic lanes virtually separated by a special demarcation marking.
