Abstract: The water quality trend in a small estuarine river is presented in light of the evolution of pollution control measures. The NPDES (National Pollution Discharge Elimination System) permits limit the amount of pollutants discharged into the river. The permit loads were determined with a mathematical model to ensure that water quality standards would be maintained under critical environmental conditions. The model was upgraded as the pollution control strategy became more sophisticated. The river water quality has shown signs of improvement as the wastewater discharges complied with waste load permits. The model is being updated and recalibrated with the most recent data to keep abreast of current water quality conditions in the river.
