Title: The need for bicycle route numbering systems
Abstract: A major criticism of many bicycle facilities constructed in the past has been that they are developed in an ad hoc and unplanned way, and often sit, unused, in isolation. While it is realised that many bicycle trips are local in nature and would not follow lengthy routes, the need to have metropolitan wide planning of bicycle access has been noted. The development of the Melbourne bikeplan maps and the central area access study are examples. To take this a step further, the development of an arterial bicycle route numbering system would also be warranted.
