Title: PROVINCIAL TRUNK HIGHWAY 75 ROUTE LOCATION STUDY
Abstract: Provincial Trunk Highway 75 is a two-lane undivided highway in southern Manitoba linking Winnipeg to the Interstate Highway system in the United States. Highway 75 has continued to experience increased use over the past ten years. As a result of this increase in traffic growth and the recognition of factors such as safety, trade, and tourism, the Manitoba Department of Highways commissioned a study of the route location of P.T.H. 75 south of St. Agathe, Manitoba, to the United States border. The route location study identifies the appropriate location for a four-lane highway within the Emerson, St. Jean Baptiste, and Morris areas. The purpose of this Route Location Study was to select the best location for the twinning and upgrading of P.T.H. 75, which was considered necessary for the following reasons: 1) The need to provide a satisfactory level of safety and service; 2) To upgrade the international route of P.T.H. 75, which connects to the United States Inter-State Highway network via I- 29; 3) The desire to promote trade and tourism; 4) An expressed provincial government commitment to extend the four lane divided highway system from the Trans Canada Highway to the United States border; and 5) To address flood-related access issues. The analysis of route alternatives focused on the engineering, environmental, and socio- economic factors affecting route evaluation and selection. Public input was solicited through public open houses and questionnaires. (A) For the covering abstract see IRRD Abstract no. 807788.
