Title: CERTIFICATION FOR THE PROFESSIONAL TRAFFIC OPERATIONS ENGINEER: A CITY AGENCY PERSPECTIVE
Abstract: As the January 1999 examination for Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) Certification approaches, members will focus on the value of certification to them and to their organizations. From a city agency perspective, certification will provide confidence in hiring; organizational credibility; public acceptance; political and peer support; a benchmark of technical knowledge, skill, and abilities; professional recognition; and education. It will be a number of years before employers can count on a pool of certified applicants for every job opening. However, as certification catches on, the quality of practice will grow and every aspect of the profession and the services provided to the public will be improved.
