Title: EPIDEMIOLOGIC BULLETIN NO. 24: YEARS OF POTENTIAL LIFE LOST AND OTHER TRENDS IN ALCOHOL-RELATED FATAL TRAFFIC CRASHES: 1977-1987
Abstract: The data in this Epidemiologic Bulletin was obtained from the Fatal Accident Reporting System (FARS) and explores alcohol involvement in fatal traffic crashes over a ten-year period. The report is divided into three categories: general trends and fatality rates, BAC testing and results; young drinking drivers. The section on general trends and fatality rates covers the total number of fatal traffic crashes, fatalities and alcohol-related fatalities, both total and alcohol-related fatality rates, and years of potential life lost due to alcohol-related fatal traffic crashes. The section on BAC testing includes variation in driver BAC testing across states and test results of 0.10 or more, while the section on young drinking drivers examines both alcohol-related traffic fatalities and peak BAC percentages according to age. Tables provide numerical data for the period 1977-1987, and supply evidence for both positive and discouraging trends.
