Title: The Tilting Train's Future is Shaping up in Savigliano
Abstract: In Alstom's Savigliano factory in Italy, the construction of tomorrow's tilting train is in full production. The first of the New Pendolino trainsets should be delivered to Trenitalia this November (2006). This article previews the fourth-generation tilting train, all of which since 1976 share the so-called active tilting system, with actuators that tilt the train body toward the inside of a curve. Tilting considerably reduces the combined effect of gravity and lateral acceleration on the seats, countering the centrifugal effect experienced by passengers and increasing their comfort. With a maximum tilt of 8 degrees, the Pendolino can reach speeds up to 30% faster than conventional trains on curves, while improving ride quality. The evolution and development of the tilting train since 1976 is generally described, and the features of the fourth-generation version are provided in some detail.
