Title: PROSPECTIVE TRENDS IN PASSENGER TRANSPORT IN THE EAST EUROPEAN COUNTRIES
Abstract: The existing situation with respect to passenger transport in Eastern European countries is analysed and assessed on the basis of trends reflected by the statistical data available. A comparison is made with transport trends in Western Europe on the basis of the market for transport, road transport, rail, ownership and management of undertakings, consumption and demand, public funding, ideology, protection of the environment and regulation. An attempt is then made to draw conclusions concerning possible scenarios for foreseeable future trends. Problems specific to East European transport are discussed and current funding mechanisms found to be particularly restrictive. Policy options are examined in investment and modal choice. The impact of East-West rapprochement on modernisation programmes is considered and ways in which the West can help listed. These include technology transfer, investment and loans, assistance in standardising regulations and invitations to participate in international organisations.
