Title: IMPROVING PUBLIC TRANSPORT EFFECTIVENESS - NEW ZEALAND'S CHALLENGE
Abstract: Improving public transport effectiveness was identified by the New Zealand Transport Agency as one of its five strategic priorities following its establishment in 2009. The Agency has now engaged with public transport stakeholders to adopt a wider collaborative sector approach to improving public transport effectiveness. A Public Transport Leadership Forum, comprising public and private sector chief executives was formed and has adopted a 50 year vision for dramatically improving public transport in New Zealand. To do this, it agreed a cohesive framework with six key themes to be advanced: improved customer experience, integrated networks, strengthened leadership, improved operating model and practice, aligned resources, and utilisation of smarter technology. The first step has been to prepare a three year action plan that identifies some key transformational initiatives which will create a step change in public transport systems and operation in the three main cities in New Zealand: Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. This new, national approach is the first of its kind. It poses significant challenges, but there is wide recognition in the sector that a new long term, collaborative and customer focussed approach to planning investment and operating services will ensure public transport plays a more significant role in our transport network over the next 50 years
