Title: A STUDY AND EVALUATION OF THE TESTING OF THE OHIO DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS BITUMINOUS CONCRETE MIXES AND DISCUSSION
Abstract: EFFECTS OF THE CRITERIA IN THE PROPOSED BUREAU OF PUBLIC ROADS RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT TRIAL SPECIFICATIONS, SECTION 401 (BITUMINOUS PLANT MIX PAVEMENTS), ON SAMPLING, TESTING PROCEDURES, AND CONTRACT PAYMENTS, ARE EXAMINED. RESULTS OF TESTS USING THE TRIAL SPECIFICATION TESTING PROCEDURES FROM SIX ASPHALT CONCRETE PROCEDURES USING THE SEVERAL KINDS OF AGGREGATE AVAILABLE IN OHIO IN THE MIXES ARE ANALYZED ANC COMPARED WITH PRESENT BITUMINOUS CONCRETE CONTROL PRACTICES. CONFORMANCE WITH THE PROPOSED SPECIFICATIONS WAS DETERMINED. THE TRIAL SPECIFICATION LIMITS RESULTED IN MAJOR REDUCTIONS IN CONTRACT PRICE FOR THREE OF THE PROCEDUERS. HOWEVER, IT SHOULD BE POINTED OUT THAT THE PRODUCER DID NOT ASSUME THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR QUALITY CONTROL AS PROVIDED FOR BY THE PROPOSED SPECIFICATIONS. /AUTHOR/
