Title: A DESIGN TOOL AND A ROUTING AND SCHEDULING TECHNIQUE FOR PERSONAL RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEMS
Abstract: Before personal rapid transit (PRT) systems can gain general acceptance, they must prove that they can deliver good service at reasonable cost. This paper discusses a mathematical model of a PRT system and a related non-linear programming problem. The results are intended to be used by planners and manufacturers (1) to calculate the optimal cost and service of a proposed system, and (2) to calculate optimal routing and scheduling strategies. In constructing the optimization problem, the system has been viewed as a set of scarce resources which must be efficiently allocated among the demands for service.
