Title: FACTORS CONDITIONING SPEEDS ON ROADS IN URBAN AREAS
Abstract: In the first section of this investigation the speed of 200 cars in 21 Cologne city streets was measured and the characteristics and situation related circumstances were recorded. The evaluation of the data was carried out using a path-analysis. It can be seen that the visible and usable width of the road have the greatest influence on speeds. A similarly clear factor is attributed to stationary traffic. Narrow traffic lanes resulting from reduced widths and parked vehicles have a speed-reducing effect. Under different conditions speeds would be greater. The more passing vehicles and moving traffic present, the more speed on the other side of the road reduces. In the second section a report is given on a questionnaire given to 300 selected drivers from the first random test at varying speed patterns. The following results were obtained: the fast driver generally drives a powerful car, is often driving for business purposes and also drives more kilometres in a year. He uses motorways more often for his journeys, is younger, seldom has children and uses seat belts less often. He considers himself to be more skillful and more capable of dealing with difficult traffic situations and is prepared to take risks. A higher accident involvement for these drivers can be clearly seen but the difference is not great. Young, fast drivers are more opposed to the introduction of a speed limit of 130 kilometres per hour on motorways. Fast drivers answered in the questionnaire more in the direction of driving style, autonomy, proving themselves and thrill. (TRRL)
