Abstract: Until recently Transport SA (TSA) has focused most of its compliance effort on traditional on-road enforcement. In response to community concerns about compliance levels, particularly for heavy vehicles, TSA intends to have increased numbers of inspectors operating on South Australian roads by the end of the financial year. As well as traditional enforcement, this paper outlines a range of complementary tactics which TSA is developing to help achieve an acceptable level of compliance with the law by heavy vehicle operators. An important related issue is the role that road agencies play in the management of community perceptions about the behaviour of heavy vehicle operators.
