Title: THE RUF SYSTEM--A DUAL-MODE AUTO/TRANSIT CONCEPT
Abstract: The basic philosophy of traditional intelligent transportation systems (ITS) is problematic. Increasing efficiency of cars on highway lanes is extremely difficult without increasing the number of serious accidents. The scope of this paper is to point to a more intelligent solution called the RUF system. The problems of congestion, pollution, and CO2 emission is so severe in large cities that its solution will justify a new infrastructure as a supplement to the old. A dual-mode electric car (a RUF) driving either on normal roads or riding on an ultra light elevated rail, is the basic element of the RUF system. The RUF operates as a normal car from the users residence to the rail access ramp where it enters the rail directly. On the rail, all RUFs are close coupled to obtain high capacity and low energy consumption. The city is covered by a connected rail network, which is carrying both RUF-trains consisting of up to 100 individual RUF cars and larger units called MAXI-RUFs with room for 10 seated passengers. The rail is low cost modular construction that can easily be implemented in connection with the existing road network. With this new intelligent infrastructure, it is possible to serve the city with very attractive public transportation and at the same time offer congestion-free individual traffic for those living in the suburban areas where public transportation is of no use.
