Abstract: Fatigue crack propagation has caused the development of localized failures in steel bridge components which in turn has resulted in brittle fracture form crack instability. The largest category of cracking is a result of out-of-plane distortion in a small gap which was usually a segment of a girder web. A detailed examination and analysis of the causes for crack growth in a number of bridge structures has recently been published; this paper provides a summary of the general classes of cracking discussed in that study.
