Title: CASE STUDY: ANTICIPATED RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FREIGHT CAPACITY OF THE GATEWAY MOTORWAY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF THE AUSTRALIA TRADECOAST AND PORT OF BRISBANE
Abstract: Many freight infrastructure projects are described in terms of the boost they will provide to the local, state and national economies, and how this impact works through to the wider economy in terms of increased employment and productivity benefits for commerce and industry. While an improvement in freight transport will result in lower transport costs for users, it may also indirectly contribute to higher industry productivity. In addition, it may also lead to additional productivity gains for businesses through substitution between the basic logistical inputs - transport, inventory and operations. The aim of this paper is to examine the ways in which change to freight transport infrastructure can affect economic growth, and if this should be incorporated into the evaluation of freight projects. Finally a case study demonstrates the practical difficulties of demonstrating this relationship for the Gateway Motorway. (a) For the covering entry of this conference, please see ITRD abstract no.
