Title: A COMPARISON OF IN-SITU MEASUREMENTS IN A SOFT CLAY WITH LABORATORY TESTS AND THE SETTLEMENT OF OIL TANKS
Abstract: THE RESULTS OF IN-SITU STATIC PENETRATION TESTS (DEEP SOUNDINGS) ARE COMPARED WITH IN-SITU VANE TESTS TO OBTAIN A VALUE FOR THE FACTOR. THIS IS RELATED TO THE BEARING CAPACITY FACTOR NC, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT SIDE SHEAR ON THE AND THE EFFECTS OF RATE OF LOADING. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CONE RESISTANCE AND MODULUS OF COMPRESSIBILITY IS ALSO CONSIDERED. OBSERVED SETTLEMENTS OF THE TANKS ARE COMPARED WITH CALCULATED VALUES. IT IS SEEN THAT IMMEDIATE SETTLEMENTS ARE SIGNIFICANTLY GREATER THAN CALCULATED AND THAT RATE OF SETTLEMENT IS CONSIDERABLY FASTER THAN WOULD HAVE BEEN INDICATED BY OEDOMETER TESTS, AND THE REASONS FOR THESE DIFFERENCES ARE DISCUSSED. THE VALUE OF THE COEFFICIENT OF SECONDARY CONSOLIDATION AS SHOWN BY THE SETTLEMENT RECORDS IS NOTED. /RRL/(A)/
