Abstract: The mayor of Indianapolis wants the city to be the first in the country to convert its entire vehicle fleet to run on alternative fuels. Although other cities have “greened” portions of their fleets, the Indianapolis plan is unique in calling for the conversion of every vehicle, including police cars. The first step towards the green fleet is to change about 500 city-owned sedans to plug-in or hybrid vehicles. This switch is required by executive order as older vehicles are phased out. The next step is to move heavy fleet vehicles such as garbage trucks and fire engines to compressed natural gas. The last step will be the conversion of the police vehicles. Since more than 1,900 of the city’s 3,100 vehicles are police cars, this change will have a significant effect on fuel consumption and the environment.
