Title: HIGH-SPEED RAIL AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF REGIONAL TRANSPORT
Abstract: An account is given of a project in Darmstadt, Germany, which aims to maximise the potential of high-speed rail in the area and esteblish Darmstadt as a major centre. Local infrastructure will be improved to provide fast access to the high-speed railway station for local rail traffic, the bus network, private cars, bicycles and pedestrians. It is expected that public transport as a whole will be enhanced by this strategy. Also required will be a revaluation of town planning in the area and a number of reports have already suggested alternative schemes. The project, 'model Darmstadt', which is the result of collaboration between the Town Council, the German Federal Railway, the Chamber of Industry and Commerce and regional transport companies, will be financed by the Federal Republic, the Region of Hess, the City of Darmstadt, the German Federal Railway, regional transport companies and private investors. This paper was presented at the EURAILSPEED 92 conference held in Brussels, April 27-29, 1992. For the covering abstract see IRRD 853180.
