Title: Practical design of minimum energy waterways
Abstract: Minimum energy structures will often dispense with the need for long and expensive bridges, while also enabling the afflux and backwater components of heading up to be minimised. The specific energy discharge relationship is defined by means of chart and table. Discharge controls for various structures are defined. A method of prediction of energy and water level profiles throughout minimum energy structures is presented, and a method for design of transition fan lengths is outlined. The effects of various commonly encountered physical restrictions on design are discussed and transition fan construction is outlined. The design of downstream transitions with rising beds is discussed and suggested form and friction loss coefficients are provided. A step by step procedure for designing minimum energy structures is provided as an appendix and common design pitfalls are discussed. (A).
