Title: RAILROAD OPERATIONS PLANNING USING SIMULATION MODELLING
Abstract: This paper presents a mainline operations model, developed for BHP Iron Ore's Newman Hedland Railroad, which simulates the movement of traffic (trains, bankers, track maintenance machinery, etc.) on the Centralised Traffic Control (CTC) railroad. The model has been used to: (1) Ascertain the 'optimum' train schedule for both production and maintenance; (2) Investigate mainline capacity subject to different operating conditions; (3) Determine the influence of variations in train schedule on the available track maintenance windows. The simulation model has proved to be useful and benefits of using the model in operations planning can be seen.
