Abstract: After protracted and hazardous beginnings with Kepler and Galileo, Isaac Newton in his Principia (1687) constructed the mechanics of terrestrial and cosmical systems. Using this in combination with his law of gravitation, in the same work he deduced Kepler’s laws and many other regularities in the motions of the planets. Small wonder that the further development of celestial mechanicsremained for almost two centuries one of the chief fields of endeavour for great mathematicians and astronomers.
