Title: BUS-BASED PARK AND RIDE: A TOOL TO HELP THE URBAN ECONOMY?
Abstract: As in North America, in most British cities the demand for and supply of personal automobile services are moving at variance with one another. In England Park and Ride has emerged as one method of diverting excess demand. In some towns, proposed developments of new roads and parking lots have been forestalled as a result of the presence of a large number of historic buildings, all of which are to be preserved in situ for posterity. In other towns, councils are unwilling to bulldoze even derelict housing to clear the way for more roads. These factors, coupled with the ever increasing demand for personal mobility, tend to ossify existing traffic arteries which, by the year, are attempting to carry ever more traffic. This, in turn, generates increasing pollution and slower traffic. Bus-based Park and Ride offers an alternative by reducing the amount of road traffic necessary to sustain economic activities in Central Business Districts.
