Title: RENEWING FINLAND'S RAIL NETWORK TO MEET TRAFFIC NEEDS OF THE FUTURE
Abstract: Several projects are underway in Finland to renew the ageing rail network to meet traffic needs. Infrastructure management in Finland is the responsibility of the Finnish Rail Administration (RHK). The effects of the European Directive on interoperability and the new Railway Act on RHK are considered. Most of Finland's railway lines are used for both passenger and freight traffic. Railways account for about 25% and 5% of freight and passenger traffic, respectively. Measures needed to improve these percentages are considered. Track renewal projects are underway on the Helsinki-Tampere line and the Kouvola and Pieksamaki line. As part of the EU's Nordic Triangle and Corridor 9A projects, a direct line is being constructed between Kerava and Lahti to speed up traffic between Finland and Russia. New urban lines are being constructed in Helsinki. Rail yards will need to be renewed by 2010. The electrification of the network has continued since the 1960s. The maximum axle load for freight wagons is 22.5 tonnes. This will be increased to 25 tonnes on important routes. Efficiency will be increased through competition.
