Title: VALIDATION OF AN ARTERIAL ROAD TRAFFIC SIMULATION MODEL
Abstract: The ability of an arterial road traffic simulation model, (MULTSIM), to realistically represent observed traffic flows is demonstrated by applying the model to an arterial road in Sydney for which detailed data was available. Travel times and number of stops made by instrumented cars travelling either in a transit lane or non-transit lanes along Military Road, Sydney in peak hours under two signal control strategies are well matched by the model. That the model can simulate traffic behaviour over all levels of service is demonstrated by successfully reproducing the classic relationships between speed, volume and concentration for traffic flow. Finally, the usefulness of the model to support a developing theory of traffic flow is demonstrated in circumstances where the collection of on- road data would be extremely arduous. Implications for the value of using MULTSIM in theoretical investigations can be made. (Author/TRRL)
