Title: The Men Who Loved Trains: The Story of Men Who Battled Greed to Save an Ailing Industry
Abstract: The author presents the personalities involved with and the events leading up to and resulting in the demise of Penn Central, the creation of Conrail and the ultimate merger battles between Norfolk Southern, CSX and Conrail. At stake was control of the Northeast's extensive and potentially profitable rail system, passenger and freight services. Included is all the intrigue of corporate maneuvering between railroad giants in a merging frenzy such as the Pennsylvania Railroad with it's subsidiary the Norfolk and Western, New York Central, Chesapeake and Ohio and Baltimore and Ohio. Caught up in the unfolding events are the smaller railroads losing profitable market shares such as the Delaware and Hudson, New York, New Haven & Hartford, Boston & Maine and Maine Central. The author reveals the boardroom schemes and manipulations of dedicated railroad men who had but one ultimate goal and that was and is to create a viable and workable railway system which is up to meeting the challenges of an expanding world market.
