Title: TRENDS IN CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE OF ROADS AND BRIDGES
Abstract: This article provides a brief overview of the development of road and bridge work in India. Growth in the road network, in particular the National Highways Development Project, has changed the highway scene considerably: in the following six years a new generation of four-lane roads will be built. Central Road Fund taxes on fuel provide finance for development and maintenance of roads. Modern technological developments are being adopted, including high-performance and fast machinery and the use of devices to protect the environment and conserve natural resources through materials recycling. Bridge design and construction developments have produced longer span bridges, composite structures and slipform cast arches. Repair and rehabilitation uses high technology products and methods, and seismic design is being used to reduce the effects of earthquakes. However, the author feels that not enough attention is being paid to the development of modern management systems for maintenance and further research is needed.
