Title: THE EFFECTS OF DISTRACTION ON AUTOMOBILE DRIVING
Abstract: AN ATTEMPT HAS BEEN MADE TO ANALYZE THE DETERIORATION IN DRIVING BEHAVIOR BY ASKING THE DRIVER TO PERFORM SIMULTANEOUSLY WITH THE DRIVING TASK, A BINARY-CHOICE TASK GIVEN AT A PACED RHYTHM AND ALLOWING NO ERRORS. THREE MODES OF DRIVING IN SLALOM ON A TRACK AT DIFFERENT LEVELS OF DIFFICULTY WERE USED. THE PERFORMANCE WAS MEASURED BY SCORES OF TIME AND NUMBER OF ERRORS. SEVERAL EXPERIMENTAL SESSIONS WITH A TOTAL OF 46 SUBJECTS HAVE SHOWN THAT THE HANDLING OF A VEHICLE IS VERY AUTOMATIC FOR DRIVERS HAVING MADE MORE THAN 30,000KMS, THAT SPEED AND PRECISION OF DRIVING SEEM TO BE AFFECTED DIFFERENTLY BY A DISTRACTION STRESS, AND THAT THERE IS NO TRANSFER OF LEARNING FROM A SITUATION WITH DISTRACTION STRESS TO A SITUATION WITHOUT DISTRACTION STRESS. /AUTHOR/
