Title: CRITERIA FOR ASSESSMENT OF THE BEARING STRENGTH OF EXISTING RAIL BRIDGES
Abstract: The normal service life of many rail bridges in use has already expired. These bridges were designed according to load criteria and calculation methods which no longer correspond to present requirements. For this reason, these bridges are often subject to load restrictions and limit line capacity, but it would be extremely costly to rebuild them. Bridge engineers must therefore schedule renovation work, but they must also ensure that optimal use is made of existing structures by using new scientific methods to assess residual service life.
