Abstract: The article describes how Transport Canada turned to experts at universities to help in the drive to achieve greater safety in driving. Engineers, scientists, physicians and statisticians were enlisted to provide solid research and scientific technique. Highway fatalities have since declined from the 6700 in 1973, to 4000 last year. University experts and their accident investigation teams have been given contracts for another 3.5 years. The main task of these teams is to probe motor vehicle accidents and collect data on the accidents for Transport Canada's road safety directorate. The information increases understanding of the cause of accidents and, where necessary, leads to safer standards. The standards, found in the Motor Vehicle Safety Act, describe minimum safety requirements for vehicle components. The team's monitoring of accidents, and their sampling methods are described. Located in 8 provinces, they provide expertise in their local areas. The article presents a resume of nine individual team leaders' interests that stem from regional issues and their engineering and medical backgrounds.
